We reported in the last newsletter on the intense use now being made of the public footpaths around Romsey.  We have been monitoring closely their use and any opportunities to create new routes.

Footpaths of particular interest are those in and around the Fishlake Nature Reserve. We are looking closely at a recent planning application which talks of the possibilities of adding to the network as one possible gain from a permission being sought for two new houses close to the former World of Water.  Many residents, possibly as many as 150 each day, have been using the circular walk from there over to the barge canal and back to Romsey Station.

To assist social distancing, the warden for the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust has been busy cutting back vegetation beside the paths.   In many chance meetings that I have been telling fellow walkers of the Romsey and District Society’s plans. We will be discussing with Hampshire County Council, the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust and Test Valley Borough Council as the owner of the Nature Reserve what enhancements to the network of paths might be possible.  In this, we have the advantage of being to call on the expertise of the two other RDS committees for Planning and the Natural Environment.
