Sites of Importance for Nature Conservation
Natural Environment Committee
Introduction
Local planning authorities may designate areas as Sites of Importance for Nature Conservation (SINCs) where they are known to support important habitats and species. HBIC identifies sites for selection on behalf of the local planning authorities which are then submitted to the SINCs Advisory Panel for approval. The Panel is made up of officers from Hampshire County Council, Natural England and the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust. Approved sites are then notified back to the relevant Planning Authority. The information is collated and held by Hampshire Biodiversity Information Centre ( HBIC ) who survey and monitor the sites on a rolling programme each year. The designation of an area as a SINC means that it has a degree of protection within the planning system and also opens the way for grants to support effective management.
SINCs constitute an extremely valuable resource in the natural environment. The Romsey and District Society decided to survey the SINCs in Romsey and Romsey Extra in order to raise public awareness of this asset. The information made available here comes directly from HBIC. The Society hopes that it will provide useful information for anyone wishing to find further details about local SINCs.
Further information about our SINCs may be obtained from Hampshire Biodiversity Information Centre ( HBIC ) at https://www.hants.gov.uk/landplanningandenvironment/environment/biodiversity/informationcentre
N.B. Most SINCs are on private land and the public has no right of access.
Please respect and protect these areas.
Thank you to Dr Robert Page and Hampshire Biodiversity Information Centre - HBIC, for permission to apply this information to Romsey and District Society Web pages.
