Romsey Barge Canal

The old barge canal is visible as a waterway from the Plaza to the A3057 at Timsbury, and the route of the old towpath can be walked for the whole of this stretch. The canal was closed in 1859 when much of its course was built over for the railway.  Since its demise as a canal, it has lost the locks which maintained the water level, and has taken on more of the character of a stream. As the historical character has diminished, so the wildlife interest has increased.  You can read more about the History of the canal here and more about the Environment and wildlife you may see along the canal here. A Gallery of old photographs is available.
